Well, it's finally happened, kids.

Due to a very creepy situation where someone at work keeps letting me know that he knows, "Allllll about me," I've been forced to make my journal pretty much friends-only.

I've gone back and changed all of my previous posts for the last almost 4 years to "Friends-Only" using HIDE Journal.

From here on out, most of my posts will be Friends-Only with the exception of those that I want to share publicly, like this one.

It's really, really sad that someone would make this attack on me. My LiveJournal has been something that I have honestly enjoyed to the core of me for the last 4 years. I've made some great friends both online and in real life. I've learned so much about other people AND about myself.

The fact that this person took that all away from me not only makes me angry, but it makes me sick. There aren't many things that I really, honestly and truly enjoy like my LiveJournal. And now that's gone.

It's not like my life is over because of this, but a very big, very important part of it is gone in a way. Changed due to someone's creepy stalking and my fear of what might come from that.

*sigh* I'm very upset and I really hate this person right now. I only have so many things that I enjoy and now this is gone too.

A complaint to HR about this person's harrassment might be in order. Especially if you can do so without actually pursuing any action, just to get this person's behavior on the record. He's no doubt creepy to others as well.

Well, they could just as easilly dig into my LJ and find things about me to get on my case about, too.

I mean, we all do it. We Google people, we look people up, etc. But he just takes it to an extreme. It's really REALLY fucking creepy.

If he keeps it up, I'll just ask him to back off. And if he doesn't, I'll have to figure out something from there.

In the meantime, I'm not even sure it's worth keeping up the journal now. I loved how it was open and I could write anything and anyone could read it.

Kinda kills the point now.

When I first got my LJ account, it was because a bunch of coworkers had one too... "wouldn't be fun" kind of thing.

Now most of my LJ friends are gay guys I've never met. Which is why I now diligently use filters.

My LJ is overwhelmingly friends-only with a very, very few exceptions. And it still works as a fun way to record my thoughts and get feedback from others.

I advise you not to give up on it entirely, in the heat of the moment.

Now that it's friends-only, they can't. And I agree you have lots of friended readers -- being read by random outsiders is not a good idea anyway unless you carefully limit your subject matter, which you don't. ;-) Don't let this stop you.

Are you sure you're not just jumping to conclusions? If all he said is he knows "aaaalll about you" that wouldn't necessarily indicate he knows anything about LJ.

Seems to be a trend this week. I had to make all my posts Friends Only after a not-too-well-disguised message from a boss. Oh, and the ironic thing is that I was laid-off from this friggin' messed-up non-profit two weeks ago after my position was "eliminated" in Pennsylvania. *sigh*

I enjoy though that this post was not Friends Only. :-)

I decided a while back that most of my posts will be friends-only as well. It sorta sucks, but I don't know a way around it. I like that my work friends can't see this, and I suspect that I'll be hiding my journal in the near future.

I had the same thing happen to me and I had similar reactions. Oh great, one asshat pees in the pool and all of a sudden another thing I really enjoyed, that fed me and helped get me through my life, is gone. Or has to be locked down and constantly guarded because it was being used in a really vicious and malicious way.
By someone I used to consider a friend too. *sigh* It really makes you wonder what God's metric is for assholes vs. decent humans. Someone resting on the lever or something up in heaven? Because we seem to have a bumper crop of the former over the latter.
I'm sorry this happened to you. :( If it helps, Im currently imagining this person being rolled around in fiberglass and then dunked into a vat of lemon juice...

Hire a private eye- get the skinny on the creep who has made you do this and then let's see who has the last laugh.

Don't be vengeful.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the creepiness. I hope the Universe takes care of him. I am glad, however that you have included me in the Lock down :)
My advice, give it some time, maybe creepy asshat will go away or die or something. I would just lock it down for now and know that one day yuo'll be able to post openly agian sometime soon.

Hugs and and good wishes to you, my friend. I hope thigns settle down, don't get any more creepy and that you will find your happiness again sometime. Know that I am honered that I am able to see your posts.

My sympathies to you my friend!

I'm so sorry this has happened. After I'd been on LJ for a few months I started to worry about "the wrong person" seeing something I'd said (since I'm quasi in the public eye with my job). I finally decided I didn't want to have to worry but I'd be damned if I was going to censure my own LJ! So I just started employing filters. Life has been a lot simpler since then.

Sorry for my horribly ungrammatical comment before, but yeah, basically I just wanted to say that it sucks someone is being like that, and that I do enjoy your journal so if you would like to add me, that would be cool.

You've gotten a lot of sympathy from others here, so I'll play Devil's advocate for a moment and hope you'll forgive me later for a less sympathetic point of view. :)

You've been (sometimes) publishing very personal information about yourself (usually) in an unsecured way on the web. Perhaps you chose to ask indexing sites not to index your journal (not all of them honor this request), but other than that you often took no other steps to keep information about you from being disseminated in the widest possible fashion.

I'm not sure what expectations you had that random, desirable/friendly people might find your journal while random, undesirable/unfriendly people would not. In four years, I doubt that this is the first undesirable person to discover your journal; he was just tactless enough to mention it to you rather than just quietly keep reading.

Even if he read the entirety of your journal (minus protected posts), he still hasn't read anything that you didn't explicitly give him permission to read (by publishing the information online). It is you who published your journal, not him.

So, yes, your colleague is indeed not a very nice person for flaunting his possession of information; I do not dismiss his transgression, but let's be clear that his transgression was not in the reading of your journal.

Aww, I'm really sorry some asshole has to ruin something you enjoy so much. It's not fair. I hope everything gets better.
And thank you for friending me by the way. : )

OK, I'll bite. If Jeff didn't mind the guy reading the journal, then how could the guy possibly have some sort of upper hand? The kind of "nyah-nyah, I know all about you!" comment(s) that the guy is making would hold no weight if Jeff were entirely comfortable with the whole world reading his unprotected posts, yes? Or am I missing something here?
